London’s Muslim mayor Sadiq Khan vows to stand up to Trump’s ‘bile’

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has vowed to firmly respond to what he described as repeated attacks and “bile” from US President Donald Trump, as a long-running public feud between the two figures resurfaced.

Speaking on Thursday, Khan condemned Trump’s recent remarks in which the US president described him as “horrible, vicious, [and] disgusting.” Khan said the comments were part of a sustained pattern of personal and political attacks that extended beyond him to Britain as a whole. He added that Trump has repeatedly used inflammatory language, including claims that Khan’s electoral victories were driven by immigration, which Khan said undermines the UK’s democratic values and social cohesion.

The London mayor said he would not be intimidated by such rhetoric, arguing that standing up to a bully is the most effective response. He stressed that remaining silent was not an option when London, its people, and its values were being targeted, particularly through what he described as sweeping generalizations about followers of one faith.

Khan also referred to Trump’s shifting focus toward other Muslim political leaders, suggesting the US president could now direct similar attacks at New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani. He downplayed reports of a cordial meeting between Trump and Mamdani, describing it as tactical rather than a sign of genuine reconciliation, noting that Trump had previously labeled Mamdani a “communist.”

Trump reignited his criticism of Khan last month, repeating claims that immigration played a decisive role in his election. Khan has previously described Trump’s rhetoric as racist, sexist, misogynistic, and Islamophobic.
