US Congressman Faces Backlash Over Remarks on Muslims Praying in New York

A Republican congressman has come under sharp criticism after making remarks about Muslims praying on a public street in Brooklyn, New York, The Times of India reported. Randy Fine described the worshippers in a now-deleted social media post using language widely condemned as offensive and dehumanising.

The comments prompted swift reactions from civil rights advocates, faith groups, and lawmakers across party lines. The American Jewish Committee criticised the remarks as unacceptable, warning that demonising rhetoric can fuel discrimination and violence, and reaffirmed that religious freedom is a core American principle that protects the right of all communities to worship freely.

Democratic Congressman Dan Goldman also condemned the comments, calling them inappropriate for an elected official and urging Fine to issue an apology and retract the statement. While the post was removed, no apology had been issued at the time of reporting. The incident has renewed scrutiny of Fine’s past statements and public positions on Islam, as well as broader concerns about inflammatory language by public officials and its impact on social cohesion.
