President Donald Trump on Monday signed an executive order directing senior national security officials to begin the process of determining whether specific chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood should be designated as Foreign Terrorist Organizations,The Hindu reported.

The order instructs Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to assess selected branches under relevant U.S. counterterrorism laws, including the Immigration and Nationality Act and the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.

The document describes the Muslim Brotherhood as a transnational movement with multiple regional affiliates. It cites actions by chapters in Lebanon, Jordan, and Egypt, alleging involvement in or support for violent activities that threaten regional stability and U.S. interests.

According to the order, the military wing of the Lebanese chapter was involved in rocket attacks alongside Hamas and Hezbollah following the October 7, 2023 assault in Israel. It also claims that a senior figure in the Egyptian chapter called for attacks against U.S. partners, while Jordanian leaders have allegedly provided support to Hamas.

The directive states that these activities endanger American civilians and regional allies. The administration’s stated policy aims to work with partner governments to restrict the resources and operations of any chapters deemed eligible for terrorist designation, with the goal of reducing potential threats to U.S. national security.
