The United States has designated four entities in Germany, Italy and Greece as global terrorists, Reuters reported. The State Department said the targeted organizations were linked to what it described as “violent Antifa groups,” marking one of Washington’s most expansive actions yet against left-wing militant networks.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that Germany-based Antifa Ost, along with three groups in Italy and Greece, had been classified as “Specially Designated Global Terrorists,” with plans to designate them as Foreign Terrorist Organizations later in November. Rubio said the move builds on President Donald Trump’s stance toward Antifa and signaled that additional groups could face similar action.

According to the State Department, the organizations are associated with anarchist or Marxist ideologies and have carried out violent attacks in recent years. Antifa Ost was accused of assaults in Germany and a series of incidents in Budapest in 2023. Germany’s domestic intelligence agency has previously identified the group as a violent network. Several members were arrested between late 2023 and 2024, though authorities say the organization remains active, including targeting far-right political figures.

The U.S. also listed Italy’s Informal Anarchist Federation/International Revolutionary Front and two Greek groups—Armed Proletarian Justice and Revolutionary Class Self-Defense. Greek officials said they oppose all forms of terrorism, while Italy did not immediately comment. Revolutionary Class Self-Defense has claimed responsibility for attacks in Greece, including an explosion at Hellenic Train and a 2024 attack on the labour ministry. The State Department said Armed Proletarian Justice planted a bomb near Greek riot police headquarters in 2023.
