110 US Muslim Centers Urge California Governor to Veto Free Speech Bill

More than 110 mosques, Islamic centers, and Muslim community organizations in the United States—including the Shia Muslim Council of Southern California—have called on California Governor Gavin Newsom to veto Assembly Bill 715, which they argue restricts freedom of speech.

According to the Middle East News cited by Shia Waves Agency, the open letter warns that the legislation would limit the ability to discuss the realities of Palestine in public schools.

The Council on American–Islamic Relations (CAIR) also raised concerns that the bill could silence Muslim voices and other communities by equating legitimate criticism of Israeli policies and alleged war crimes with antisemitism.

The organizations stressed that the measure threatens democratic values and urged Newsom to reject it in defense of free expression and academic freedom.
