U.S. Veto Blocks UN Security Council Ceasefire Resolution on Gaza

U.S. Veto Blocks UN Security Council Ceasefire Resolution on Gaza

The United States has vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, effectively halting international efforts to end the conflict, Reuters has reported. The U.S. action blocked the 15-member Council from adopting what would have been a binding demand for hostilities to cease between Israel and Hamas.

U.S. envoy Morgan Ortagus defended the decision, stating that the resolution was unacceptable and reiterated that any diplomatic solution must begin with the release of hostages and the surrender of Hamas. The veto follows a longstanding pattern of U.S. support for Israel at the UN, where it holds veto power as one of five permanent members.

Despite widespread backing among other council members, the failure of the resolution leaves the UN without a unified position on the crisis. Washington maintains that its priority is securing hostage releases and a lasting end to the violence.
