Fear-Based Immigration Enforcement Weakens U.S. Trust and Safety, FreeMuslim Warns

A new editorial by the Washington-based advocacy group FreeMuslim argues that heightened immigration enforcement in the United States has undermined public trust, harmed community safety, and destabilized social cohesion.

The report highlights evidence that fear-driven strategies, such as ICE raids and the Secure Communities program, have discouraged Hispanic crime victims from reporting offenses, despite no reduction in crime rates. Collaboration between local law enforcement and federal immigration agencies has also pushed undocumented immigrants to withdraw from schools, banks, police services, and other institutions.

The impact extends beyond undocumented populations. The report cites findings that Hispanic U.S. citizens reduced their use of welfare programs amid aggressive enforcement, while restrictive policies have contributed to increased anxiety, sleep disorders, and stress among children, including U.S.-born children of immigrants.

Additionally, media narratives—both positive and negative—around immigration have been linked to reduced trust in government health messaging among Latino communities. Analysts warn this decline in institutional trust further erodes cohesion and weakens collective capacity to address broader social challenges.
