A poster reading “No-Muslim Zone” displayed in a public space in the French city of Orléans has triggered widespread condemnation, reigniting debate over the rise of Islamophobia in the country.

The image, which circulated rapidly on social media platform X, drew strong reactions, including from MP Thomas Portes of the left-wing France Unbowed party, who denounced it as “disgusting” and urged Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau to take responsibility in addressing the hostile climate.

According to figures from the Collective Against Islamophobia in France, reported acts of hostility against Muslims increased by 37% in 2023. Analysts warn that extremist rhetoric in some media outlets and online spaces is normalizing hate speech, fostering daily discriminatory behavior, and deepening social divisions.

Civil society activists described the Orléans incident as a stark warning about the growing marginalization of Muslim communities, stressing the urgent need for stronger measures to counter all forms of hatred and discrimination.
