Yazidis in Germany Face Deportation Fears Amidst Unsafe Conditions in Iraq
————————————–
Yazidis who sought refuge in Germany after surviving atrocities committed by ISIS are now facing fears of deportation back to Iraq, as Germany implements stricter migration rules, Rudaw reported. Both the United Nations and the German parliament have recognized the ISIS campaign against the Yazidis as genocide.
Despite ISIS being militarily defeated, the Yazidi homeland of Shingal (Sinjar) in northern Iraq remains largely devastated. The region lacks essential services, security, and infrastructure, with rival factions continuing to vie for control, rendering it unsafe for refugees to return.
The article also notes a recent incident where German authorities deported 43 Iraqis, including a Yazidi family, whose deportation order was later stayed by a court only after they had already landed in Baghdad. While efforts are underway to facilitate that family’s return to Germany, an estimated 5,000 to 10,000 Yazidis in Germany are currently under deportation orders, causing widespread fear within the community.
Center-left political parties in Germany, particularly the Greens, have criticized these deportations. They are calling for an immediate halt, asserting that Yazidis are not safe in Iraq and are deserving of continued protection in Germany.
