A devastating fire at Gabriel House, an assisted living facility in Fall River, Massachusetts, resulted in nine deaths and left one resident critically injured, officials reported. The fire broke out shortly after 9:30 p.m. Sunday, with heavy flames and smoke observed upon firefighters’ arrival. Approximately 30 residents were hospitalized, and five firefighters sustained minor injuries but have since been released.

Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon described the incident as an “unfathomable tragedy,” praising the swift rescue efforts by fire, police, and EMS personnel that saved numerous lives. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with no evidence of foul play at this time. The facility, housing about 70 residents, was equipped with sprinklers and smoke alarms, though their status during the fire is unclear.

Union representatives highlighted concerns about understaffing within the Fall River Fire Department, which they say may have impacted rescue operations. Local authorities continue to support victims’ families and survivors, with temporary shelter and resources provided. An investigation into the fire’s origin and safety compliance at Gabriel House is ongoing.
