Los Angeles protests over ICE raids, National Guard deployment enter fourth day

Los Angeles saw a fourth day of protests Monday as tensions escalated over President Trump’s deployment of the National Guard and recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids. Demonstrators blocked freeways, set fires, and clashed with police, leading to 53 arrests by midday.
California Governor Gavin Newsom sued the Trump administration, calling the Guard deployment “illegal and immoral.” The state argues it was not consulted, violating sovereignty. Meanwhile, the Pentagon mobilized an additional 2,000 Guard troops and 700 Marines to assist federal law enforcement.

Protests intensified Sunday, with crowds throwing objects at police and setting self-driving cars ablaze. Authorities used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse unlawful assemblies. The LAPD emphasized it does not participate in immigration enforcement under California’s sanctuary laws.

Trump criticized the response on social media, urging stricter crackdowns, while Democrats, including Rep. Maxine Waters and former Vice President Kamala Harris, condemned the Guard deployment as politically motivated.

The unrest follows ICE raids that detained over 100 immigrants last week, sparking widespread demonstrations. While officials urged calm, clashes continued, with vandalism reported at federal buildings.
