Morocco issues high-risk wildfire warning across nine provinces

Morocco’s National Agency for Water and Forests issued an urgent wildfire warning on Sunday for nine provinces, citing extreme fire risk due to favorable weather conditions. The alert, effective from Monday to Friday, places regions such as Chefchaouen, Tangier-Asilah, Larache, Taounate, Beni Mellal, Azilal, Taza, Khemisset, and Kenitra under “red level” threat.

Citizens, forest workers, and visitors were urged to avoid activities that could ignite fires and to report any signs of smoke or suspicious behavior immediately. Additional provinces were placed under “orange” (high) and “yellow” (moderate) risk levels, with authorities relying on predictive scientific mapping to prevent fire outbreaks.

The government allocated nearly $17 million for wildfire prevention in summer 2025. Despite a recorded 382 forest fires in 2024—a drop of 82% from 2023—approximately 874 hectares were burned, mostly involving seasonal vegetation. Forests cover around 12% of Morocco’s territory and face annual fire threats.
