Halal Forum in Kenya Charts Roadmap for East African Trade Growth

According to IQNA and eastleighvoice.co.ke, a major forum on halal trade development was held on August 26, 2025, at the Jamia Mosque in Nairobi, Kenya. The event, themed “Science, Innovation, and Halal Industry,” brought together diplomats, business leaders, researchers, and experts to explore ways to strengthen the halal sector in East Africa.

The forum was co-organized by the Royal Thai Embassy, the Halal Science Centre of Chulalongkorn University, the Somali Embassy in Kenya, and the Jamia Mosque. Participants included the Somali Ambassador to Kenya, Jibril Ibrahim Abdulle; Thai Ambassador Morakot Janemathukorn; Malaysian High Commissioner Ruzaimi Mohamad; and representatives from Iraq and the Arab League.

Discussions focused on leveraging halal science to promote sustainable business practices, enhance academic cooperation, and support entrepreneurs in developing products that meet international standards. Presentations addressed halal and haram principles, blockchain applications in halal trade, HAL-Q certification, regional and global trade routes, and evolving community needs.

A delegation from Chulalongkorn University, led by Professor Winai Dahlan, emphasized knowledge transfer and innovation as key to supporting the halal sector in East Africa. Sheikh Muhammad Osman Warfa, president of the Jamia Mosque committee, highlighted the forum’s potential to strengthen economic partnerships and empower Muslim entrepreneurs while upholding halal values.

The Somali Ambassador described the forum as an essential platform for integrating East Africa into the global halal economy, projected to reach $5.91 trillion by 2033.
