Somalia: 9 killed, dozens wounded in attack claimed by Al-Qaeda affiliate Al-Shabab
A Somali official said on Sunday October 23rd, that 9 people were killed and dozens wounded in a car bomb attack and shooting on a hotel in Kismayo, before the security forces were able to kill the perpetrators, media reported.
The shooting began after a car loaded with explosives crashed into the gate of the Tawakkol Hotel in the coastal city. Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabab said it carried out the attack.
“Nine were killed in the explosion, including students and civilians, and 47 others were wounded, some of them seriously,” said Yusuf Hussain Domal, Jubbaland’s security minister.
He added: “The hotel where the explosion occurred was near a school, which led to the injury of many students.”
Domal said that the security forces killed 3 of the attackers, while a fourth was killed in a bomb explosion.
Footage broadcast by state television on its Twitter account showed members of the security forces transporting one of the wounded to an ambulance.
In 2019, a similar attack on another hotel in Kismayo killed at least 26 people.
