The United Nations has warned of a worsening humanitarian crisis in West Africa, as more than 17 million people in northern Nigeria face acute food insecurity amid escalating conflict and declining international support.
Humanitarian and livelihood crises in Muslim-majority areas of Africa have reached an alarming stage, particularly as insecurity, displacement, and reduced aid funding continue to threaten the lives of millions of vulnerable people.
According to Al Jazeera, the United Nations World Food Programme said intensified fighting and shrinking humanitarian resources have pushed northern Nigeria into its worst hunger crisis in nearly a decade.
The agency said more than 17 million people across nine conflict-affected states are now struggling with acute food insecurity, an increase of nearly two million compared with previous assessments.
The situation is especially critical in Borno State, where insurgent attacks and cuts to humanitarian assistance have left more than three million people on the brink of severe and catastrophic hunger.
The World Food Programme warned that the humanitarian situation is rapidly deteriorating due to war and displacement. It said $89 million is urgently needed over the next six months to provide food and life-saving assistance and prevent a full-scale disaster in northern Nigeria.
