Increased Pressure on African Refugees and Displaced Persons Amid Disruptions in Maritime Routes and Rising Humanitarian Aid Costs

Disruptions in shipping routes and rising international transport costs have severely delayed the delivery of humanitarian aid to refugees and displaced persons in Africa, raising concerns about the intensifying humanitarian crisis.

According to Radio Farda, citing the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), tensions in the Middle East and insecurity in maritime routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, have caused the cost of transferring aid to crisis-affected African countries to more than double.

The report states that relief ships, instead of using shorter routes, are now forced to take longer paths, such as around the Cape of Good Hope, which increases delivery times by up to 25 days.

The UNHCR also noted that increased reliance on land transport has led to a shortage of trucks and higher costs, and along with rising fuel prices in some areas, the delivery of aid to countries like Sudan, Ethiopia, and Congo has been further disrupted.

The agency warned that the limited available financial resources have significantly reduced the ability to meet the vast needs of refugees and displaced persons.
