Somalia’s armed forces said they killed 29 al-Shabaab militants during coordinated military operations in the town of Jabad Godane in the country’s southeast, according to a defence ministry statement issued on Thursday, as reported by Reuters.

The ministry said the operation was carried out in cooperation with international partners as part of ongoing efforts to counter the Islamist group’s activities. In a separate statement posted on X, the ministry said overnight airstrikes in the Middle Shabelle region also destroyed vehicles and weapons allegedly intended for use in attacks against civilians.

Officials said the strikes were part of broader security operations targeting al-Shabaab, which has been waging an insurgency since 2007 in an attempt to overthrow Somalia’s internationally backed government and impose its strict interpretation of Islamic law. The ministry praised international partners for their support in intelligence sharing and operational assistance but did not identify the countries involved.
