Millions Gather in Senegal for Grand Magal of Touba
——————————–
Millions of people have converged on the city of Touba for the annual Grand Magal, an event commemorating the spiritual rank attained by Sheikh Ahmadou Bamba.
According to Anadolu Agency, approximately two million people attended this year’s observance, which marks the 131st celebration of the event. The pilgrimage honors Sheikh Bamba’s non-violent resistance to French colonial rule, which led to his exile.
The Grand Magal, which translates to “praise” in the local Wolof language, is a significant event for Mouride followers, who gather to visit the Grand Touba Mosque and the tomb of Sheikh Bamba. It provides an opportunity for religious worship and family reunions, and draws attendees from across Senegal and the Senegalese diaspora worldwide.
