ICC Warns of War Crimes and Humanitarian Crisis in Darfur
……………..
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has expressed “reasonable grounds to believe” that war crimes and crimes against humanity are ongoing in Sudan’s Darfur region, the court’s deputy prosecutor told the UN Security Council on Thursday. The humanitarian situation in Darfur was described as “intolerable,” with widespread famine, attacks on hospitals and aid convoys, and the use of sexual violence as a weapon.
The deputy prosecutor highlighted that civilians, particularly in displacement camps, face targeted violence amid escalating clashes involving the Rapid Support Forces and allied groups. ICC investigations are based on over 7,000 pieces of evidence collected over six months, including field missions and cooperation with UN agencies and civil society.
Efforts to improve reporting and visibility of gender-based crimes are ongoing. The ICC noted some cooperation from Sudan’s government but urged stronger action, especially in executing arrest warrants for senior officials linked to past atrocities.
The court called on the international community to break the cycle of impunity fueling the violence and emphasized that collective justice could help reduce suffering and lay the groundwork for peace in Darfur. Despite obstacles, the ICC remains committed to pursuing accountability.
