African region sees further decline in TB deaths, cases

The African region has seen a significant decline in tuberculosis (TB) deaths, with a 42% reduction from 2015 to 2023, and a 24% decline in cases, according to the WHO Global TB Report 2024. In 2023, approximately 1.9 million TB cases were detected, up from 1.4 million in 2020, with treatment coverage rising from 55% to 74%. World TB Day 2025 emphasizes the theme “Yes! We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver,” highlighting the need for urgent action and investment in TB interventions.

South Africa achieved a 50% reduction in TB incidence ahead of the 2025 target, while Mozambique, Tanzania, Togo, and Zambia met the 75% reduction goal for deaths. However, challenges remain, including limited access to rapid diagnostics, which currently reach only 54% of patients. The African region requires $4.5 billion annually for comprehensive TB services but currently has only $0.9 billion available, leaving a $3.6 billion funding gap. Urgent action is needed to close this gap and improve TB control efforts.
