IOM Appeals for $81 Million to Assist Migrants in Horn of Africa

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), alongside 45 humanitarian partners, has launched an appeal for $81 million to provide critical assistance to over one million migrants in the Horn of Africa, Yemen, and Southern Africa, Reliefweb.com reported.

This funding, part of the Migrant Response Plan (MRP), aims to support vulnerable populations, including women and children, facing dangerous journeys from Ethiopia and Somalia.

Every year, hundreds of thousands embark on perilous routes, often fleeing economic hardship, violence, and climate shocks. In 2024, at least 559 lives were lost along these migration paths, with women and children particularly at risk of violence and exploitation.

IOM’s Director General, Amy Pope, emphasized the urgent need for support, stating, “Without immediate action, suffering will deepen.” The MRP seeks to address immediate humanitarian needs while tackling the root causes of irregular migration, highlighting the necessity for global collaboration in migration management.
