Sahel States Unite: Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger to Launch Common Passport for Enhanced Security
Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger are set to launch a common biometric passport to enhance cooperation and security, TRTWorld reported on Monday citing Mali’s military leader, Colonel Assimi Goita.
This announcement coincides with the one-year anniversary of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), established to address escalating security challenges from militant groups.
Goita emphasized plans for a shared information channel to promote harmonious communication among the three nations. The AES, which also formed a joint military force, aims to counter instability affecting the combined population of 72 million. Following their withdrawal from ECOWAS, the leaders highlighted significant victories against militants and expressed openness to discussions with international and sub-regional partners to further improve security in the region.
