In light of the world’s preoccupation with the emerging corona virus, China has implemented strict new measures on the occasion of the great Ramadan month for the Muslim Uyghur minority in eastern China.
According to Better Winter, the measures included being forced to eat pork.
According to informed sources in the eastern Xinjiang Province, the local government issued orders last April to implement new measures to combat terrorism and ensure stability during the month of Ramadan.
Instructions were also issued to the police to intensify Muslim observation, especially during Friday prayers, daily Iftar, and Ramadan activities.
This comes at a time when the Uyghur minority is generally suffering persecution by the Chinese authorities, where millions of them are in educational camps.
A Uyghur Muslim in Qinghai Province reported, “During Ramadan, we refrain from eating and drinking, but the government forces us to break this rule by instructing staff to place plastic water bottles on our way to the mosque, and forcing everyone to drink before entering the place of worship.”
Uyghur students who study in other Chinese provinces are also prohibited from celebrating Ramadan.
The school administration also forced Muslim students to eat pork meals, and were forbidden to hold any religious rituals.
