The Afghan army forces have freed 62 soldiers and police from a Taliban-controlled prison in the northwestern Badghis district.
“The liberation operation was carried out at night, 62 Afghan National Army and Afghan police personnel were released from prison,” said district governor Abdul Ghafoor Malikzai, adding that the operation was carried out in coordination with the local administration and with the support of the Air Force.
He noted that as a result of the operation, five Taliban prison guards were arrested and three others wounded.
The hostilities between the Taliban and Afghan forces have escalated in the recent period, as Afghan forces launched ground attacks and air strikes in the context of various operations against the Taliban, during the last days, killing 51 of the movement’s elements, in an escalation indicating the deadlock in renewed peace talks.
