The European Council said it has paid attention to the promotion and protection of public freedoms and fundamental rights in many countries, including Bahrain, which are among the priorities of the European Union.
The Council responsible with defining the general political direction of the European Union affirmed its opposition to disproportionate legal and administrative restrictions on civil society organizations, and stressed the endeavor to promote and protect freedom of opinion and expression, and the safety of journalists and bloggers.
It expressed grave concern for the continuing violations of human rights in Bahrain and will therefore continue to condemn threats, attacks, defamation campaigns, malicious trials, travel bans, arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances, detention, and retaliation against human rights defenders, journalists, bloggers, media professionals and human rights lawyers, and endeavor to hold those involved to account.
