Leaders of the Christian Democrats, of which German Chancellor Angela Merkel belongs, have opposed Muslim girls wearing headscarves in kindergartens and primary schools.

“Wearing the hijab makes young girls visibly alien, whether in the playground or in the schoolyard,” said a recommendation to the committee to consider applications to be made at the party’s congress in Leipzig on Friday and Saturday.

The recommendation added that the Christian Democratic Party is betting on persuading parents not to put on the headscarves for their young children.
