Egyptian authorities have arrested more than 1,100 people since the end of last week when a series of massive protests erupted in several cities demanding the resignation of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the Arabic Network for Human Rights Watch said.
“The Egyptian Center for Economic and Social Rights and the Egyptian Committee for Rights and Freedoms, documented the arrests,” Press TV quoted Jamal Eid as saying.
On Friday night, in defiance of a ban on protests, hundreds of people took to the streets in downtown Cairo and several other Egyptian cities to express their dissatisfaction with President al-Sisi, demanding his removal from power.
The report pointed out that “security forces moved to disperse the protests scattered and strengthened their presence in several cities, while some witnesses said that security officials in plain clothes stopped people in central Cairo to check the content of social media on their phones.”
