The number of Bahrainis detained since the start of last week’s US-led conference in Manama appears to be far higher than previously reported.
According to data compiled by Bahraini rights campaigner Ebtisam al-Saegh, at least 40 people have been arrested in recent days.
Al-Saegh is reporting that some of those have been subjected to incommunicado detention before being released while other remain incarcerated.
However, the activist adds that the latest campaign of arrests is still ongoing.
It remains unclear if those detained are actually being charged with any crime.
The two-day Manama conference was used to unveil the Trump administration’s investment plan for Palestine, which has proven to be widely unpopular among millions of Arabs for ignoring the Israeli-occupation of Palestinian territories.
