The imam of Yadryam Mosque, located in Otradnoye, a northeastern district of Moscow, is accused of spreading terrorist and extremist ideas.
He is said to have delivered a speech in support of Hizb ut-Tahrir al-Islam, deemed to be a terrorist group.
A court has ruled that he must be under house arrest until August 27.
Yadryam Mosque was established in Moscow in 1997 and has a capacity of 2000 worshippers.
