The Greek Council of State, the country’s alternative Supreme Court, has approved on Thursday, the construction of a mosque in Athens.

Construction of the mosque had been previously blocked by 111 residents who had identified themselves “Orthodox Christian Greek Citizens” in their court submission, citing the construction of the mosque as both unconstitutional and illegal.

The court rejected their objections and in particular those relating to the need for environmental impact study, noting that no such study was required for temples and places of worship.

Construction of the mosque is expected to start in the immediate future and will be approximately 850 square metres with a capacity for 300 men and 50 women.
