Hate crimes against Muslims triple in France
Islamophobic threats or assaults “tripled to some 400 for the year 2015
Hate crimes against Muslims in France tripled last year while anti-Semitic assaults remained at an already “high level” and attacks on Christian sites rose by a fifth, French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said.
Cazeneuve added that Islamophobic threats or assaults “tripled to some 400 for the year 2015.” He went on saying that more than half occurred in the first quarter of the year after extremists attacked the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and a kosher supermarket in January, claiming 17 lives.
France is home to the largest Muslim population in Europe, estimated at 4-5 million. The French Muslim community represents approximately 6 percent of the total population of the 58.5 million population in France. However, French Muslims do not feel safe due to the lack of security measures taken by the French government compared to other French communities under threat.
