UN Chief Urges Safeguarding Indigenous Peoples’ Rights to Live in Peace and Dignity

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the importance of protecting the rights of indigenous peoples in a message for the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, observed on August 9, Xinhua reported today.

Guterres highlighted that indigenous communities, representing around 6% of the global population, play a crucial role as “keepers of knowledge and traditions” and are vital for environmental stewardship.

He warned that these communities face significant threats, including violence and the impacts of industries like mining and agriculture, which lead to deforestation and land degradation.

The UN Chief underscored the need for their rights to self-determination, as outlined in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, to be fulfilled.

It’s worth mentioning that this year’s theme focuses on the rights of indigenous peoples in voluntary isolation, stressing the potential harm of unwanted contact. Guterres called on the international community to support indigenous rights, ensuring they can live in peace and dignity.
