A fire that broke out Thursday at an orphanage in the Mohammadia district, east of Algeria’s capital Algiers, killed 11 people and injured 19 others, according to Algerian authorities. Civil protection teams continued efforts to extinguish the blaze and investigate its cause.
The fire erupted at the Assisted Childhood Institution in the Mohammadia area, causing one of the deadliest incidents in the capital in recent months. The General Directorate of Civil Protection said 10 of the injured suffered burns of varying severity, while rescue teams evacuated five people with disabilities to safety.
Authorities have not yet released the identities or ages of the victims and have not determined the cause of the fire. An investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The tragedy occurred as Algeria faces a period of extreme heat, increasing the risk of wildfires across the country. Civil Protection officials said they had responded to 913 fires nationwide since July 8 amid rising temperatures and heightened summer fire risks.
