Italian Newspaper Publishes World’s First AI-Generated Edition

In a groundbreaking move, Il Foglio, an Italian conservative liberal daily, claims to be the first newspaper to publish an edition entirely created by artificial intelligence, The Guardian reported. This initiative is part of a month-long experiment designed to explore the impact of AI on journalism, according to editor Claudio Cerasa.

The four-page edition, titled Il Foglio AI, features content generated for writing, headlines, quotes, and even irony, with journalists primarily inputting questions into an AI tool and reading the responses. The front page includes articles discussing topics such as U.S. President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and a positive outlook on the Italian economy. Notably, none of the articles directly quote human sources. The final page humorously includes AI-generated letters from readers, one of which questions whether AI will render humans “useless.”

Simultaneously, the $19 billion academic publishing industry is increasingly embracing AI-powered tools to enhance the quality of peer-reviewed research and expedite production, Inside Hire Ed reported. Major publishers like Wiley, Elsevier, and Springer Nature have introduced AI tools to assist in research, writing, and peer review, aiming to improve research integrity amid a shortage of qualified peer reviewers.

Despite the potential benefits, many researchers remain hesitant to adopt AI due to a lack of guidelines and training. Surveys indicate that while researchers recognize AI’s importance, over 60% feel unprepared to implement it. Experts stress the need for human oversight to maintain the depth and novelty of research, highlighting ongoing challenges in ensuring quality amid publication pressures.
