AI-Powered Tool to Predict Dementia Risk from Brain Scans
Scientists are set to analyze over a million brain scans using artificial intelligence to develop a tool for predicting dementia risk, The Guardian reported yesterday.
Researchers from the University of Edinburgh and the University of Dundee will examine CT and MRI scans collected over a decade as part of the NEURii global research initiative. By utilizing AI and machine learning, the team aims to link imaging data with health records to identify patterns that could aid in early dementia diagnosis.
With the number of dementia cases projected to nearly triple to 153 million by 2050, the urgency for effective tools is critical, as current costs exceed $1 trillion annually. The project, approved by NHS Scotland’s public benefit and privacy panel, will securely store data in the Scottish National Safe Haven.
Experts have emphasized the potential for integrating these tools into routine radiology to enhance clinical decision-making. They have added that better use of brain scans could lead to earlier diagnoses and facilitate the development of new treatments.
