10th of Rabi’ al-Thani Marks Tragic Attack on Imam Reza’s Shrine in 1911

On May 23, 1911, coinciding with the 10th of Rabi’ al-Thani 1330 A.H., a devastating incident occurred at the holy shrine of Imam Reza, peace be upon him, in Mashhad, marking a dark chapter in Shia history. Just two hours before sunset, Russian artillery fire and armed assaults disrupted the peaceful environment, causing widespread panic among pilgrims and locals. This aggression stemmed from internal dissent and external provocations, particularly in response to the formation of a gendarmerie by American advisor Morgan Shuster.

The Russian forces targeted the shrine, resulting in over a hundred casualties and significant damage to the sacred site. For four consecutive days, the shrine was occupied by Russian troops, igniting public outrage and highlighting the blatant disrespect for religious sanctity. This tragic event not only inflicted physical harm but also deeply wounded the religious sentiments of millions of Muslims, solidifying Russia’s position as a major adversary of Islamic values. The incident serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance in protecting religious beliefs and sacred sites.
