Samarkand selected as Islamic World’s Cultural Capital for 2025

The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) has officially named Samarkand, Uzbekistan, as the Cultural Capital of the Islamic World for 2025, Khaama Press reported. The announcement was made on May 24, 2025, highlighting Samarkand’s rich historical and cultural heritage.

Samarkand, one of the oldest cities globally with a history of over 2,800 years, was a central hub on the Silk Road, connecting China and Europe. It was the heart of the ancient Sogdian civilization and remains renowned for its Islamic architecture, including landmarks such as Registan Square, Shah-i-Zinda, and Bibi-Khanym Mosque.

ICESCO plans to launch a series of celebratory events starting next week and continuing throughout 2025. These activities will include international festivals, academic conferences, art exhibitions, and cultural forums designed to promote dialogue, creativity, and unity across the Islamic world. Dr. Salem bin Mohammed Al-Malik, ICESCO’s Director General, emphasized the city’s cultural prestige and the organization’s commitment to hosting programs in collaboration with Uzbek institutions that honor Samarkand’s historical significance.

The designation also underscores Uzbekistan’s growing role in preserving Islamic heritage, with ongoing support from UNESCO and ICESCO for restoration and education projects. By spotlighting Samarkand, ICESCO aims to foster appreciation for shared history and inspire future generations to celebrate their cultural legacies.
