A boat used for people-smuggling sank off the coast of Syria’s Tartous province, leaving four people missing, according to Syrian officials and regional media reports.
Rescue teams saved six people after the vessel went down near the al-Arida area in rural Tartous. Search and rescue operations were continuing to locate four others who remained missing.
Syrian Civil Defence teams said they received a report about a boat sinking near the southern coast of Tartous and launched search operations in cooperation with the coast guard and naval forces. Initial information indicated that 10 people were on board.
Erem News reported that the incident occurred on the morning of Eid al-Adha and that preliminary information suggested the boat may have been involved in sea-based human smuggling toward Europe.
