The United Nations reported on Friday that at least 562 aid workers, including 376 UN employees, have been killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023, amid ongoing Israeli airstrikes. The statement followed the death of Omar Hayek, a 42-year-old Médecins Sans Frontières staff member, in an airstrike on Deir al-Balah that also injured four colleagues.

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said all were clearly identifiable as medical personnel and that Hayek was the 14th MSF worker killed since the war began. Dujarric warned that intensified airstrikes on residential areas are worsening the humanitarian crisis, particularly in northern Gaza. The continued bombardment has left more than 66,000 Palestinians dead, mostly women and children, and rendered much of the enclave uninhabitable.
