Suicide Bombing in Eastern Syria Kills Police Officer, Daesh Suspected

A suicide attack at a security checkpoint in Syria’s eastern Deir Ezzor province on Friday killed one police officer, Arab News reported citing state media, which blamed the assault on the Daesh militant group.

The official news agency SANA reported that two attackers targeted the Siyasiyeh checkpoint. Security forces managed to shoot and kill one of them, but the second detonated his explosives, killing a member of the internal security forces.

Daesh, also known as ISIS, has not claimed responsibility, but authorities attributed the operation to the group, which has continued to carry out sporadic bombings and ambushes despite its territorial defeat in Syria in 2019. The militants maintain sleeper cells in the country’s desert regions and frequently target security forces and civilians.

The attack underlines the persistent threat posed by Daesh in eastern Syria, particularly in Deir Ezzor, where remnants of the group remain active along the Euphrates River valley.

In a separate incident, SANA reported that a car bomb exploded in Damascus on Saturday. The blast caused material damage but no casualties.
