Israel struck military tanks in southern Syria amid deadly clashes between Druze militias and Bedouin tribes in Sweida province, where dozens have been killed and nearly 100 others injured, Anadolu Agency reported.
Syrian government forces sent to restore order also clashed with armed groups. The Syrian interior ministry reported over 30 deaths, while the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights cited at least 99 dead, including civilians and security personnel.
According to the state news agency SANA, a number of army forces deployed in the area also lost their lives while trying to protect the civilian population from the outlawed groups.
The violence began after a Druze vegetable seller was kidnapped by a Bedouin tribe, sparking tit-for-tat attacks. Israel, which has a Druze population, warned Damascus by striking tanks, stating it would not allow harm to the Druze in Syria. Druze leaders called for a ceasefire but some rejected government security forces’ presence, demanding international protection.
Syrian officials said the conflict is between the state and criminals, not sectarian, and emphasized the Druze as partners in national unity. The UN urged calm and dialogue to protect civilians and advance political transition. Syria’s foreign ministry condemned foreign interference and called for an end to violence and illegal arms.
