X Restricts Accounts of Saudi Government Critics
——————————-
Social media platform X has restricted access in Saudi Arabia to more than 60 accounts belonging to critics of the Saudi government, according to reports, prompting criticism from human rights activists over the platform’s approach to freedom of expression.

The restrictions were reportedly imposed following requests from Saudi authorities to bring the platform’s activities into compliance with local regulations. According to The Guardian, users inside Saudi Arabia have been unable to access the affected accounts, while the accounts remain available elsewhere.

The reported restrictions have renewed debate over the responsibilities of major technology companies when operating in countries with restrictive media environments. Human rights advocates argue that complying with government demands to restrict access to critical voices can undermine claims by technology platforms to protect freedom of expression online.
