Saudi Opposition Party Advocates Political Reform Amid Repression and Regional Criticism
——————————————-
The Saudi opposition group National Gathering Party (“Nas”) is calling for political reforms, human rights protections, and greater citizen participation, highlighting restrictions on freedom of expression and political activity in the kingdom. Its leaders, mostly abroad due to domestic repression, also criticize regional policies that they say exacerbate tensions and undermine public interests.
Founded in 2020, National Gathering Party (Nas) promotes structural reforms to empower citizens, strengthen elected institutions, and ensure separation of powers. The party emphasizes freedom of expression, equality, respect for human rights, and women’s empowerment. Party-affiliated media, including Sawt al-Nas, stress that religious and intellectual diversity is key to social stability.
Key leaders such as Yahya Asiri and Mudawi al-Rasheed operate from London and the U.S. due to Saudi restrictions, reflecting the kingdom’s repression of political dissent, arbitrary limits on civil liberties, and curbs on public assembly.
In a recent statement on X, Nas criticized Saudi authorities for regional policies that increase tensions and foreign dependency, citing the Gaza conflict as an example. The party frames these policies as threats to both public interest and human rights, warning of broader social and political consequences.
Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have long documented Saudi Arabia’s suppression of political expression, arbitrary detention, and constraints on civic participation as violations of international human rights law.
