Nine Pakistani police officers were killed in an armed attack targeting a security checkpoint assigned to protect a dam project in Balochistan province, southwestern Pakistan, in the latest incident to hit the troubled region.
Local authorities said armed men attacked a security post guarding the Mangi Dam project, one of the province’s infrastructure projects. The attack left nine police officers dead, while several others remain missing.
A local official in the area said security forces launched a wide search operation to pursue the attackers and locate the missing personnel. The Balochistan provincial government confirmed the death toll but did not identify the attackers or name any group responsible for the assault. No group has claimed responsibility so far.
Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest province by area, has faced years of security unrest, with repeated attacks targeting security forces, government facilities, and infrastructure projects.
Pakistani authorities say they are continuing security operations in the province to pursue armed groups, stressing that protecting strategic projects remains a priority because of their economic and development importance.
