A suspected suicide bomber was shot dead by local residents after an explosives-laden motorcycle detonated outside a mosque in northwestern Pakistan, police said.

The blast occurred at about 2:45 p.m. on Friday outside a mosque in Khairukhel Pakka village, in Lakki Marwat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Police said the motorcycle had been fitted with explosives before it exploded near the mosque. Two people, including a girl, were killed, and 10 others were wounded, according to a casualty list circulated by local police.

Authorities did not immediately identify the attacker or confirm the intended target. No group claimed responsibility for the attack.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which borders Afghanistan, has seen a rise in militant violence in recent years. Pakistan has repeatedly accused Afghanistan-based armed groups of carrying out cross-border attacks, an allegation Kabul denies.

Police said the attacker’s body was taken into custody for investigation.
