Pakistan Urges UN to Uphold Kashmiris’ Right to Self-Determination
……………
Pakistan has renewed its call for the United Nations to enable the people of Kashmir to exercise their right to self-determination through a free and fair referendum, in line with relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
The appeal was made by Pakistan’s permanent UN ambassador, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, during a general debate of the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly, which addresses human rights and humanitarian issues. Ahmad warned that the international community’s failure to secure the rights of both Palestinians and Kashmiris undermines the credibility of the global human rights system.
He highlighted decades of alleged repression in Jammu and Kashmir, including arbitrary detention, enforced disappearances, demographic changes, and sexual violence against women.
Ahmad stressed that international silence on these violations fosters a culture of impunity and urged concrete steps to protect human rights in the disputed region, which has been a source of ongoing tension between India and Pakistan since 1947.
