Police Confrontation at Multan Shiite Mosque Sparks Tensions Over Arbaeen
………………
A confrontation at a Shiite mosque in Pakistan’s Multan has raised concerns over religious freedoms ahead of Arbaeen commemorations. According to witnesses, a local police officer, accompanied by Punjab provincial police, entered the mosque during rituals marking the mourning of Imam Hussein and warned participants against holding an Arbaeen procession, threatening consequences for noncompliance.
The incident sparked outrage among worshippers, particularly youth, who resisted what they described as sectarian intimidation, eventually escorting the officers out of the mosque. Participants cited Article 20 of the Pakistani Constitution, which guarantees citizens the right to practice their religion freely and obliges the government to facilitate religious activities without discrimination.
During the standoff, congregants questioned the police over the reasons for their intervention, expressing concern over ongoing policies perceived as discriminatory toward the Shiite community. Organizers affirmed that the Arbaeen procession would proceed as planned, despite the warnings.
Activists and rights groups have called for respect for religious freedoms and urged authorities to avoid security measures that could inflame tensions. Observers warn that continued restrictions on Shiite observances could trigger wider protests, placing the government under domestic and international scrutiny, as communities prepare to commemorate Arbaeen across Pakistan and abroad.
