A land mine explosion in northwest Pakistan’s Kurram district killed four people and injured several others on Wednesday, Arab News reported.

The blast occurred when a victim stepped on the device in a forested area known for sectarian clashes between Shiite and Sunni Muslims, which killed hundreds last year.

District police officer Habibullah Khan confirmed the dead and wounded were taken to a hospital but did not specify the number injured. No group has claimed responsibility, and investigations are ongoing. Kurram has a history of sectarian violence, mainly between militant Sunni groups who frequently target minority Shiites. A ceasefire brokered by local elders has mostly held since January, though sporadic attacks continue. Shiites dominate parts of Kurram despite being a minority in Pakistan, which is predominantly Sunni.
