10,000 Women in Pakistan Die Annually Due to Pregnancy Complications: Health Minister

Health Minister Mustafa Kamal revealed on Wednesday that 10,000 women in Pakistan die each year from pregnancy-related complications, calling it a “silent tragedy” that demands urgent action, Dawn Newspaper reported. Speaking at a World Health Day event hosted by the WHO, Kamal emphasized the need for systemic healthcare reforms to prevent these avoidable deaths.
He highlighted the poor state of Pakistan’s healthcare system and stressed the importance of individual and collective efforts to save lives. Kamal also addressed child stunting, noting that 38% of children suffer from stunted growth, which threatens the country’s future progress.
With WHO’s support, the government is committed to improving maternal and child health. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has prioritized healthcare reform, aiming to build a stronger and more equitable system. Kamal reiterated that healthcare mistakes have immediate and profound consequences, making reform a critical national issue.
