Sectarian Violence Claims 13 More Lives in Pakistan’s Kurram District
In the ongoing sectarian violence in northwest Pakistan, 13 more lives were lost, bringing the total death toll to 124, predominantly affecting the Shiite community, Arab News reported yesterday.
The latest clashes erupted after two Shiite Muslim convoys, under police protection, were ambushed last Thursday, resulting in over 80 deaths and sparking further violence.
Kurram district, home to a significant Shiite population, has been a flashpoint for sectarian conflict for decades, with tensions between Sunni and Shiite groups escalating. Despite attempts at ceasefires, including a recent 10-day truce, hostilities have continued unabated.
Local officials report a severe lack of trust between the factions, hindering compliance with government ceasefire orders. Many residents are seeking to escape the violence, but deteriorating security conditions make this impossible.
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan previously documented 79 deaths in the region from July to October, highlighting the urgent need for effective measures to restore peace and security for the Shiite community.
